Do you live near a swiftlet house?

If you currently have a swiftlet house next to your home and you are concerned about the dangers to your family and your property, please follow these steps:

1. Approach your neighbour with the swiftlet house and request to see documentation that they are operating legally. To operate a legal swift farm in an urban or residential area, they need a local authority license as well as various permits from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan). If they show you a membership to a swiftlet farming association, this document is irrelevant. They are required to have a local authority license and permits from Perhilitan to operate a legal swiftlet farm. For more information, please click here

2. If they do not show you the proper documentation for operating a swiftlet farm in an urban or residential area, then please call your local authorities to report the illegal operation. For more information, please click here

3. If the local authorities confirm that the operation is illegal, then request that they enforce the law by shutting the business down immediately (or moving it to an agricultural area where farms belong).

4. If the local authorities take no action, then consider these options:

a. Contact the company, Bird Control Specialists. It is a Malaysian company that helps businesses and homeowners with keeping birds away from your property. To visit their website, please click here

b. Purchase an ultrasonic sound wave speaker system that emits a high pitch sound not detectable by humans. The sound will scare birds away from your area. This is affordable, legal, and inconspicuous. For more information, please visit the sites here and here

5. If you follow any of these steps, please share with us your experiences by sending your stories and pictures to: NoSwiftletHousesInGeorgeTown@gmail.com
